Bonds begins a new kind of slugfest

B-baller Barry Bonds announced today that he has hired attorneys to scour news coverage in order to sue anybody who has defamed him. The feeling is understandable. There’s no doubt Bonds’ reputation has been damaged by allegations (true or otherwise).

The problem, though, is that Bonds will make the situation worse by giving his critics more ammunition to go after him. The perception: The top slugger of all time is wielding his financial might to attempt to silence critics. Since libel is extremely difficult to prove, Bonds’ message will be met by even more work to delegate to the attorneys.
