		<description>Insofar as unintended acceleration is concerned, I agree that Toyota&#039;s predicament is similar to what Audi went through, but I can&#039;t say that I see tumbleweeds ambling across empty Toyota dealer lots, at least not quite yet. The fact that I don&#039;t, I think, speaks to Toyota having done what&#039;s required these days in crisis and reputation management: acting proactively and building defenses for future crises.

Audi was almost driven out of the American market because they didn&#039;t exactly have the greatest reputation. (My father persisted in buying Audis, in spite of the electrical problems and family of chipmunks that once nested in his air filter.) The bedrock of Toyota&#039;s success in this country, meanwhile, is unimpeachable quality. After 40 years of that, consumers weren&#039;t ready to believe that Toyota had suddenly dropped the ball. Granted, other manufacturers have benefited from Toyota&#039;s troubles, but—thanks to trusting consumers acting as free-willed third party defenders—the company is hardly withering away.</description>
